TATTERSALLS IRELAND ANNOUNCE THE GEORGE MERNAGH MEMORIAL FUND BURSARY 2017

Tattersalls Ireland is inviting applicants involved in all equestrian disciplines to apply for the 2017 George Mernagh Memorial Fund (GMMF) bursary.

The annual GMMF bursary was set up in memory of the late George Mernagh who had a lifelong interest in equestrian sports and was devoted to developing these at Tattersalls Ireland. The €5,000 bursary is intended to support an applicant, from course designer/builder to competitor to instructor, to develop or further establish their career in the eventing industry. This payment is intended to assist with associated costs, over a defined period, of pursuing an equestrian career.

Former winning recipient of the GMMF bursary, Emma Golding, has part used the funding to travel to represent Ireland at the FEI World Championships for Drivers with Disabilities, which was held in the Netherlands and secured a Top 10 placing. The remainder of her funding is being used to promote opportunities for other people with spinal cord injuries and to encourage them to get involved in the sport of carriage driving. Previous winners also include Michelle Kenny, Cathal Daniels and Ian Cassells to name but a few.

Tattersalls Ireland Managing Director Roger Casey commented: "George is the reason that the Tattersalls International Horse Trials exists today, and we are honoured to have seen it grow into such a successful event. This bursary carrying George's name can go a long way towards helping applicants achieve their goals."

The closing date for 2017 GMMF bursary applications is Friday, 19th May 2017.  Applications must adhere with the terms set out below. The winner will be presented with their €5,000 bursary on Sunday, 4th June.

EXCITING CROSS COUNTRY COURSE CHANGES AT TATTERSALLS 2017

Work is well under way for the 2017 Tattersalls International Horse Trials (31 May - 4 June) which will feature new cross country courses across all classes this year.

In addition to the new Cross Country courses, Tattersalls Ireland are delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Pat Kelly, Manager of The Curragh Training Grounds, one of the leading equine facilities in the world, as Ground Consultant to the International Horse Trials. Pat will advise and contribute with regard to the on-going maintenance and preparation of the land for this prestigious event in the international equestrian calendar.

FEI Cross Country designer and former Olympian, Mr Ian Stark OBE, said "I am really looking forward to Tatts 2017. All the classes have new Cross Country courses, as we've turned the tracks round. This gives a totally different feel and creates some very exciting new challenges for the rider. Riders returning to Tatts 2017 will certainly need to allow extra time for serious course walking!!"

Managing Director of Tattersalls Ireland, Roger Casey, commented "The Tattersalls International Horse Trials is now one of the biggest equestrian events in the world and we are continuously striving to develop and improve it. The newly designed courses, along with the appointment of such a well-respected ground consultant as Pat Kelly, will bring a new dimension to this year's event. The on-going annual effort to upgrade facilities in general including a new dedicated event water reservoir in 2017, will be hugely beneficial this year- a year when we are also hosting a leg of the eventing FEI Nations Cup Series for the first time".

Riders coming from abroad can also take advantage of valuable discounts with the new ferry partner Stena Line, along with a chance to win a draw for a free ferry crossing by booking their travel to Tatts 2017 on one of their three routes from Britain.

Over 300 of our top combinations will be competing during the weekend, all battling for the coveted title of being an Eventing Ireland National Champion and to get a share of the €20,000 in prize money along with additional prizes given by our very generous sponsors.

Cross Country Course Walks will be taking place on Friday and Saturday evening. International riders Luke Drea will be walking the CNC1*, Sam Watson will be taking you round the EI90 and Sarah Ennis guiding you through the EI100 tracks.  More details will be available at the Secretary’s Office from Friday. This is a great opportunity for all riders to get advice and tips on to how to ride the course, regardless of experience!

Huge amounts of work have been undertaken by FEI International Course Designer Eugene O’Neill to make the Eventing Ireland National Championships cross country track as inviting as possible, and this includes black flag options.  Ground is also a priority and currently, the ground is in excellent order.

International multi-talented musician Liam O’Connor will be providing the entertainment on Saturday evening in the Tattersalls function room.  This will be a great opportunity to chat to fellow competitors about the day and to discuss plans for the final phase on Sunday.

The Tredstep Ireland Best Groom and Runner Up Groom awards will also be presented that evening.  All nominations are to be sent to Head Office by Wednesday 10 August – full details can be found on the Eventing Ireland website.

There will be an array of trade stands selling a variety of goods so spectators can take time to browse between watching the action.

Eventing Ireland would like to thank the entire team at Tattersalls Ireland for the time and work they have given to make the National Championships a success.

Wishing all the competitors the best of luck!
